Agriculture sector lagging behind

Nearly 60% of the country's rural population is into farming
The agriculture sector has been chronically neglected by the Asia and Pacific region of the world, leading to 218 million people - a third of the region’s poor and largely living in rural areas continue extreme poverty and broadening the gap between rich and poor. These are the conclusions reached by a 2008 survey conducted by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Roughly over half of the population in the region depends on agriculture and as the survey says it provides employment to 60 % of the working population.

Therefore this sector needs a serious attention and revitalisation. “Governments must show greater political will to address decades of policy neglect and failure in the agriculture sector” Noeleen Heyzer, the Executive Secretary of ESCAP, said. The Survey says that growth and productivity in the sector have slowed down and the Green Revolution appears to have passed millions.

“In South Asia, growth in agriculture dropped from 3.6% in 1980s to 3% in 2002-03,” the survey says and suggests that rural infrastructure needs to be improved so that the farmers are able to reach their products to markets. It further says that productivity and investment in this sector should also be increased....Continue

Want a million dollar tip?

Manisha GIROTRA is the person you need to contact. She is the India Inc.’s goddess of money
Five years earlier we were advising foreign companies to acquire businesses in India. Now we are advising Indian companies to go abroad,” says Manisha Girotra, Chairperson, UBS, India. And that’s the influencing power that this dynamic lady wields in Manisha GIROTRAIndia’s corporate circles.
Yes, in a predominantly Male industry, where females are supposed to simply make a guest appearance - get married and s h i m m y away in the darkness, there are few names, which have been able to carve a niche for themselves in the tedious world of business finance. Manisha Girotra of UBS, India is definitely a shining example in the sector, for others to follow.
She may be young but she is no newcomer to the Indian capital markets. Having set up the New Delhi office for UBS, the Swiss investment bank in 1994, she has gone on to head the company’s operations in India from Mumbai. Manisha – a Delhi School of Economics topper has worked with ANZ Grindlays and BZW Investment Banking, before making her resounding presence felt in UBS in the year 1998.
From 1998 to 2007, she has been a part of some very high-profile deals. Jet Airways’s awe-inspiring IPO, Videocon acquiring the picture tube business of French consumer electronics major Thomson Electronics and Vodafone’s entry into India via a 10% stake in Bharti Tele-Ventures, Manisha Girotra has played a major in all three big ticket deals. Her involvement in the ADR offerings of Infosys and ICICI Bank, and privatization of VSNL, IPCL, BALCO and GAIL, all make up a pretty interesting resume for the lady!

UFO has given a new face to digital movie distribution in India. Can it break the stranglehold of Big Daddy as well?

“We are not even talking to them… for us, the world is a bigger market”, says an exuberant Raaja Kanwar, without a hint of nerves, when asked whether he approached the aforementioned Hollywood studios with his technology. And he can well afford this nonchalance… after all, UFO Moviez has adopted one basic rule of survival – never confront the enemy where he’s in a position of strength.

Consequently, UFO Moviez has totally focussed on revolutionising the Indian film industry with its technology and business model. Out here, Hollywood sharks remain as mean & merciless, but sans the quintessential power they enjoy back home. Hollywood garners just around 4-5% of box office collections in India.

The Indian film industry, which is the largest in the world, churning out approximately 1,000 films every year, stands nowhere near to the Hollywood, when it comes to revenues. The Indian film industry today is valued at about Rs.68 billion. The major culprit for such a low turnover of a robust industry is piracy & inability to release films across the country at one go because of high print costs. That’s where the role of digital cinema comes in. As Kanwar proudly points out, “We opened our first theatre in October 2005 & today we are at 750 theatres in India growing at about 60-80 theatres every month.”

Minions at work to face the reality!

Few fortunate ones among the children who neither starve to death nor are victims of stary bullets, essentially end up beingMinions at work to face the reality! slogging for two meals a day. This at a time when they are supposed to enjoy the most of their childhood. For the unholy profit seekers, it makes to employ them as they would not protest about unhealthy working conditions, long working hours or poor pay. What is more horrifying is that 126 million children are engaged in horrendous work environment in mines, chemical industries & kilns. Regional estimations show that Asia Pacific region has the highest incidence of child workers (127.3 million, 19% of children work in the region).

Mystique Memoirs!

Just as an author raises a reader’s brow for penning down a contentious piece, he wins laurels aplenty for scripting characters that remain etched in the memory long after the last page is turned over. If V. S. Naipaul’s Miguel Street beguiled you with its impeccable narrative, then P. G. Wodehouse kept you in splits with his incomparable wit and humour. And to take a leaf out of a familiar figure from the archives of history, breathe life into it, ingeniously weave characters around it, in the process, creating a literary magnum opus has been the hallmark of the London-based acclaimed author, Tracy Chevalier.

Her preceding book – Girl with a Pearl Earring – may have spawned several admirers, but her latest work, Burning Bright, cements Tracy’s credentials as a prolifi c writer. Set in the city of London during the eighteenth century, in an eon where revolutionary fervour was gaining prominence in the hearts of many, Burning Bright dwells on the chief protagonist, William Blake, an acclaimed artist and poet of that era with shades of grey, whose contribution to the arena of visual arts and poetry is talked of till date. Painting the plot further is the infusion of the characters Jem Kellaway and Maggie Butterfield. While Jem comes from a family that is engaged in carpentry at Dorsetshire and arrives at the city in search of greener pastures after leading a life in the hinterland, Maggie’s family is well acquainted with the streets of London that have doled her family difficult lessons in life, relegating it to the lower strata of society.

Multilateralism is not the panacea to promote global trade

The end-June deadline is prompted by the fear of US Trade Promotion Authority Act, expiring on July 1, 2007. The revolutionary Act allows US President to enter trade negotiations. This is however questionable as Congress finds its role limited in the process – it needs to either reject or approve such treaties within 90 days of signature, without the possibility of amending them. “The fears get accentuated by the realisation that the US is just not in a hurry to revive the sagging WTO – refusing to cut the agricultural subsidies offered to its farm lobby,” says Dr. Paroma Palit of PHDCCI, talking to B&E. And till the time US takes the initiative, other major players like EU, India & Brazil too refuse to relent on issues of reducing industrial tariff s; export subsidies & opening up the service sector.

Despite EU showing great zealousness to rejuvenate the negotiations before mid-April, the prospects don’t look bright. But what if the talks fail to revive; will the world be a loser? Certainly not. Irrespective of WTO dictates, the trade will continue to flourish because it doesn’t need crutches to trot the globe.

Making laws for borderless world!

For a change, this treatise is not about criticising our already and horribly short staff ed judiciary (who, most strangely continue to be adamant about not demanding additional investments from the government for ramping up the number of judges), but about their pertinent struggle against the Indian government, whose litany of calumnious performances in social development can perhaps only be beaten by their irreverently rapscallion-like behaviour in attempting to be thorough untouchable when it comes to their haphazard and arbitrary decisions.

Car(r)e fo(u)r a 'Fresh' pie of retail?

The world’s second largest retail chain, Carrefour, is in talks with the Wadia Group to zoom into India’s hot retail sector. Though there has been no official comment, Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, said that talks are at the final stage and they might sign on the dotted line as soon as mid- February. If finalised, this will be the biggest cross border deal in organised retail sector after the tie-up between Bharti and Wal-Mart. Meanwhile, after Hyderabad, Jaipur and Chennai, Reliance Retail has rolled out nine fresh outlets in NCR, with another 22 lined up for March. The count is expected to go up to 100 stores in the next four months in Delhi and NCR.

Auto merchandising is picking up velocity & consumers love it!

And then follows the wringer – ‘Do you own the car you are passionate about?’ Your most probable response – no! Difficult to accept, yet that’s the truth, and understandably so, since these machines are the ones that have reached the pinnacle of (currently possible) technological evolutionary state and are priced dearly, very dearly... Not much can be done for the unaffordability factor though, because when standards are to be maintained, there’s always a heavy price attached to it...
