Britain ignores proliferation and chooses a belligerent approach towards its own nuclear arsenal

Currently, UK operates four Vanguardclass nuclear submarines, fitted with the Trident inter-continental ballistic missiles. By early 2020, these nuclear submarines will complete their life-cycle and need replacement. Since the lead time required to design and develop a nuclear submarine extends upto almost 20 years, the British government is keen to arrive at a policy decision soon. Paying due cognizance, or rather in a vain attempt, to appease the anti-nuclear lobby, the nuclear policy envisages reducing the number of submarines from four to three and also cut down on total number of warheads by a fi ft h; to 160 devices.
