Socialist shibboleths should give way to far reaching political and economic reforms in France

Apart from her appearance, it’s Royal’s promise to bring about a substantial change in the way politics is conducted in France, which is adding to her charm. But for a country with strong Socialist roots, the dilemma is – will the French public accept far reaching political and economic reforms? So the biggest challenge for Royal will be to sell her reform package in such a manner that least amount of friction is generated. On the economic front the image and performance of France has suffered because of its rigid adherence to labour laws and the almost religious ’35 hours a week’ work schedule.

“Intraday Trading”

Of course, Citigroup remains the largest US bank in assets terms, with $1.75 trillion (on September 30), followed by Bank of America, with $1.45 trillion. This puts the spotlight firmly on both the banks’ top men: while Bank of America has gained hugely from acquisitions carried out by Chief Executive Kenneth Lewis (for instance, FleetBoston Financial in 2004 and credit card issuer MBNA in January this year), Citigroup CEO Charles Prince has been too busy addressing legal and ethical problems at the bank. Global Income inequalities

Add to this the fact that in 2003, the top 20% nations accounted for nearly 85% of the globa income at a time when 2.8 billion people live on less than $2 a day and 1.2 billion live on less than $1 a day (according to 2003 figures of World Bank Report). While the per capita income (in purchasing power parity terms) of Norway – ranked number one in the Human Development Index – is $38,454, and that of the Czech Republic (ranked 30th) is $19,408, the same for the countries ranked 17th and beyond was an average of $281.

Strange, even dogs and cats have more equality among their sub species than mankind. Yes mankind, purported to be the most ‘intelligent’... it just seems to us, perhaps the most dumb.
