MTHR Organises Lectures on its 10th Anniversary Celebration

Continued... The events in Bengaluru (24th May) and Mumbai (27th May)
featured the renowned author and educational consultant, Tony Buzan, best known for his concept of ‘mind mapping’.

He shared some valuable insights into the workings of the human mind during the course of his lectures. He said that studies have shown that creativity of a human being is maximum (95+) when in standard KG, drops to 50 when in high school and plunges to 10 as an adult. He said that this is normal, and the natural course should be to make it rise back to its high school level.

Buzan also made some stark observations during his talks saying that the recession of 2008-09, where companies went bankrupt, was essentially due to bankruptcy of the mind. He also said that, whereas the age before year 1750 was Agrarian for 100 years, and the subsequent ones were Industrial, Information and Knowledge Ages, the one after 2007 and continuing is one of the Mind: the Intelligence Age. Why is it that people still don’t invest in gold mutual funds? Well, if you think otherwise, ask yourself, have you?

Benchmark started off with an initial corpus of about Rs.1 billion (in its fund titled Gold BeES); & from thereon, “we have got a very good response... Since the listing, the number of investors has increased over 70% & the number of units by over 30%, & that too in just about three months,” thumped Rajan Mehta, Executive Director, Benchmark Asset Management, to B&E. R Raja, Sr. Vice President, UTI Asset Management Company, was as equally excited, “From initial corpus of 1,399 kgs, our corpus has swollen to 1,581 kgs as on July 17, 2007”.

Though Ritesh Jain, Head-Fixed Income, Kotak Mahindra AMC (initial corpus Rs.400 million), stated dejectedly to B&E, “The response has been a tad lower than our expectations as the collections that we have garnered could have been higher by another 20-25%.” And there lies the most critical question. Should a 30% increase in units (as in Benchmark’s case), or a 181 kg increase in gold asset holdings (as in UTI’s case) really be a cause to rejoice?

UFO has given a new face to digital movie distribution in India. Can it break the stranglehold of Big Daddy as well?

“We are not even talking to them… for us, the world is a bigger market”, says an exuberant Raaja Kanwar, without a hint of nerves, when asked whether he approached the aforementioned Hollywood studios with his technology. And he can well afford this nonchalance… after all, UFO Moviez has adopted one basic rule of survival – never confront the enemy where he’s in a position of strength.

Consequently, UFO Moviez has totally focussed on revolutionising the Indian film industry with its technology and business model. Out here, Hollywood sharks remain as mean & merciless, but sans the quintessential power they enjoy back home. Hollywood garners just around 4-5% of box office collections in India.

The Indian film industry, which is the largest in the world, churning out approximately 1,000 films every year, stands nowhere near to the Hollywood, when it comes to revenues. The Indian film industry today is valued at about Rs.68 billion. The major culprit for such a low turnover of a robust industry is piracy & inability to release films across the country at one go because of high print costs. That’s where the role of digital cinema comes in. As Kanwar proudly points out, “We opened our first theatre in October 2005 & today we are at 750 theatres in India growing at about 60-80 theatres every month.”

Tata Motor’s trucks revamped

In order to compete with global majors, Tata is planning to bring in a new range of trucks after its home-grown Tata Motorsworldclass cars. With the golden quadrilateral highway project in the completion stages, trucks, with more powerful engines, are the need of the hour in order to link the four metros in the country. “We are revamping the whole range of products in commercial vehicles,” Tata Motors’ Managing Director Ravi Kant said. The new trucks would have a complete makeover in terms of styling and would be launched in new markets like Korea. In all probability, there would be a stake acquisition in automo- tive parts supplier, Visteon Corporation. No long term details were however available for the same.

Do you still think it is necessary to implement Six Sigma throughout an entire organisation?

Que: So why do so many companies still stuff Six Sigma into every nook and cranny?

Ans: Because they have to, especially if they are on the large side. Small companies, because of their relative informality and ease of communication, can sometimes implement change programs here and there and as needed.

But when it comes to introducing radical change across divisions, departments, layers and even countries, employees rarely respond with perfect gusto. They don’t say, “Hey, this new program that’s going to screw up my job sounds just great! Bring it on!” Th ey mutter, “Here comes the new flavor-of-the-month. If I can just ignore it long enough, it will pass.” Such resistance is natural and can even be deserved. But if a company lets those responses play out, it will get, well, nothing in return.

By contrast, consider what happened when General Electric – the company Jack used to lead – decided to implement Six Sigma in 1995. Obviously, the rollout wasn’t without plenty of bumps, but the company did make sure Six Sigma wasn’t one of many initiatives floating around.
